Sugar Creek Elementary Library Policies and Procedures
Schedule (2023-2024)
7:10-8:00 - Open Checkout
8:50-9:35 - Second Grade (daily)
Kindergarten and First grade are on an every other week schedule for library class.
Grades 3-5 are on an every other week schedule for class checkouts.
All students in all grades are welcome to visit the library to get new books between visits.
The ideology behind a flexible schedule for the school library is to allow open access for checkouts, research, and resources (including the librarian as a resource) at the teacher and students' time of need. This schedule also allows the librarian to plan and collaborate with classroom teachers, helping to build lessons, units, and provide resources to augment classroom learning.

Book Challenges
- Students return and check out books on their library day, which is determined by color (rade 2 is on a 7 day rotation).
- Students in kindergarten and first grade may check out one book at a time. They may check out another book when they have returned the previous borrowed book.
- If students do not return their library books on library day, they are welcome to select a 'blue stripe' book, which are paperback books available to borrow on an honor system.
- Students in grade 2 may borrow two books at a time and students in grades 3-5 may borrow three books at a time.
- Students in grades 4 and 5 may check out Playaways. (Playaways are audiobooks loaded onto a player that is easily transportable. Students may only check out one Playaway at a time and only if they have no current overdue or lost books on their account.)
- If a student in grades 2-5 has one or more overdue items, they may still check out books as long as they do not go over their check out limit.
- Students are welcome to come check out books during the school day between the hours of 7:05-1:50 with teacher permission. I will have classes during the day but will provide assistance if available.
- Faculty and staff may check out an unlimited number of books.
- There is a faculty and staff barcode binder kept on the circulation desk which allows for self checkout as faculty/staff need.
Overdue, Lost, or Damaged Books
- There is no fine for overdue library books - please return books as soon as you can!
- Lost books need to be replaced by the end of the school year. Due to the fact that library books have a special binding, we are not able to accept store bought replacements. Replacement cost will be added to your student's Pay Fees account to be paid online.
- If possible, damaged books will be repaired. If books are wet, sticky, ripped, chewed, or otherwise damaged beyond repair, the student's family will be asked to replace the book through their student's Pay Fees account.
Holds and Interlibrary Loans
- Students are able to request holds on books they would like to check out. Students may request a hold for up to 2 books at a time. If there is no availability for the student to check out additional books, then I will hold the book for up to 1 week and, if it is not picked up, it will be placed back on the shelf.
- Inter Library Loans are also possible at the request of a faculty or staff member. Mrs. Rickmon will contact other media specialists in the district and receive the book by courier.
Book Challenges
- If a member of the faculty, staff, and/or parent community feels that the content of a book is controversial, questionable, or inappropriate, they are welcome to submit a “Request for Re-evaluating Library Materials” form from Fort Mill School District.
- A committee comprised of the librarian, principal, and other members of the faculty and staff will review the book(s) and discuss.
